Corns & Calluses

Corns and calluses are both skin conditions that develop in response to friction or pressure, typically on the feet. While they share similarities,  callus is more diffuse and corns are more concentrated in one spot.

What are corns?

Corns are small, thickened areas of skin that typically develop on the feet or toes. Corns usually have a hard, raised centre surrounded by inflamed skin.

There are two main types of corns: hard corns and soft corns.

  • Hard Corns: These are the most common type of corns and typically occur on the tops or sides of toes or on the sole of the foot. They have a firm, dense core.
  • Soft Corns: These are usually found between the toes where the skin is moist. Soft corns appear whitish and have a rubbery texture.

How are corns caused?

Corns are primarily caused by repetitive friction or pressure on the skin. This can result from ill-fitting shoes, abnormalities in gait or foot structure, or other factors that cause rubbing or squeezing of the toes.

How do My Podiatrist Canberra treat corns?

  • Assessment and Diagnosis: Podiatrists at My Podiatrist Canberra begin by conducting a thorough examination of the affected foot to assess the size, type, and location of the corn.
  • Footwear Recommendations: Comfortable, properly fitting shoes with adequate toe space.
  • Debridement: We can physically remove the corn during an appointment.  This may involve carefully paring down the thickened skin using a scalpel or other specialised tools.
  • Padding and Cushioning:  to relieve pressure on the affected area and prevent the recurrence of corns.
  • Topical Treatments: Treatments such as urea cream and salicylic to soften and breakdown the keratin within corns.
  • Orthotics: In cases where foot structure or biomechanics contribute to corn development, custom orthotic devices are designed to correct abnormal foot mechanics and reduce pressure points.
  • Surgical interventions: Surgery may be considered for severe cases or situations where conservative measures are ineffective.
